Whether you are deep cleaning your washer or need to replace your GE washing machine agitator/ auger; this article will show you how.

A more common reason you may need to remove the GE agitator is that clothing may have gotten stuck underneath this and you may need to remove the agitator to loosen the clothes underneath.

Step 1. Unplug the Washer

- Whenever you are working on removing parts its always wise to unplug the machine even though we are not encountering electrical equipment during this article.

Step 2. Remove Fabric Softener Cap

- Some models will require you to remove the fabric softener cap at the top of the agitator then loosen a bolt underneath of the cap to further remove the agitator. In this model and example there is no bolt so we can leave the fabric softener cap in place and continue to the next step.

Step 3. Place Fingers Under Agitator Base / Pull up

- In this model pictured below the method used to remove the washer agitator base is to place your fingers underneath opposite sides of the base then with your face facing to the side to avoid accidently hitting the agitator into your face (It has never happened, but I do this out of precaution), You then pull up forcefully on the base and should hear a popping sound which is the base of the agitator coming off of the agitator base. At this point you can lift the agitator straight up and out of the washer and remove any caught clothing or replace and clean the agitator as needed.

Step 4. Replace Agitator

- Once you have removed the agitator, I like to lift it straight up and place it to the side at the same angle I removed it. I have encountered that you can have difficulty replacing it if the teeth of the agitator don't line up well with the base and I find just removing and replacing at the same angle helps with this.

You can find replacement agitators online of course. Pushing it back down you should hear a pop again which is the sound of the base locking back onto the agitator. You can manually spin the agitator to make sure that it is catching the base, and this would cause the washer to move back and forth. See below for the full video of how to replace the agitator.
