I will go over and review 10 essential items you should keep in your car in case of a roadside emergency. Or just something you would need to keep in your car for trips. This is by no means a comprehensive list but some items which I keep in my car in case I need to help myself or someone else while driving or pulled in the side of the road.

  1. Roadside Emergency Kit: This is a kit which you should keep in the back of your car just in case your car breaks down and you need to access items to repair your car, stay warm, or warn other cars in case of inclement weather or darkness. An equipped roadside kit should include items such as a flare, to warn other cars of your location and to not cause an accident. It may also include things such as: a socket wrench or socket wrench set, expandable gas can, extra spark plugs, emergency warmth fold out blanket, and more.

  1. Socket Tool Set: A Socket tool set is a must have and is needed when changing a tire or working under the hood for a must needed repair. I am linking here to a Stanley socket set. This is the same type I have in my car, mine is a 26-piece set though.

  1. Work Gloves: A strong pair of non-bulky work gloves are a smart decision to keep in case you have to work on tires or engine parts, especially in the cold weather. This new type of gloves with specialty fingertips you are able to use your phone as well with them on.

  2. Jumper Cables: Jumper cables are a must have for if you need to jump your car which everyone may have to do at one point or another. The linked item here is a 16 foot set of jumper cables, which is more than long enough for a side by side jump.

  1. Backpack with Extra Clothes Its a smart idea to have a backpack in your car with a ready set of clothes just in case you find you need to change clothes. This can be based on profession but also if you need to spend the night somewhere unexpectedly and you are away from home, this would be prudent.

  2. First Aid Kit: An essential first aid kit for the car is always a smart idea, you don't want to have to wait until you get home in case you get cuts or scraped up while on the road, or a road trip. A more comprehensive IFAK emergency medical kit is for those who may be hiking or even those attending to those involved in a car accident.

  1. Windshield Scraper: You need to keep a windshield scraper in the car to keep ice and snow off your car. Nowadays you can buy them with the brush attached to brush off snow and ice from your car.

  1. Car Jack Kit: Car jack kits generally come with your car and are located near or with the spare tire, but it is a good idea to double check that they are there. If there are not it is essential to pick one up to store in your vehicle.

  1. Car Glass Breaker: In case you are not able to get out of your car and need to quickly you can use a car glass breaker. How you use this is you hit this into a corner of your car glass, usually driver or passenger side door and press the glass outward, once the panel breaks, so you may get to safety.

  1. Bag of granola bars or MREs: You can store some nonperishable food in your car that can keep in the elements and not go bad in case you need some extra food while you are on the road. I use MREs as an example, but packs of nuts or granola bars may suffice here.
